These meetings are unique, high-level events that address the scientific and technical challenges of the next decade. This scientific meeting is part of the Royal Society's Transforming our Future conference series. The conference concluded with a keynote from Henry Dimbleby MBE, co-founder of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, who considered emerging themes from the conference and the future of human nutrition. It also discussed how these can be addressed through further research and innovation in both the commercial sector and academia. The conference discussed how scientific breakthroughs can be translated into effective strategies for improved health, including the prevention and management of chronic disease.Ī cross-sector panel discussion sought to identify the barriers to translation and the important knowledge gaps in the field. This conference examined advances being made in the science of human nutrition by bringing together speakers from both industry and academia. With an increasingly overweight and ageing UK population, the incidence of such diseases and the associated healthcare costs continue to rise. Poor nutrition is a leading cause of chronic disease, including type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, and various forms of cancer. Nutrition plays a profoundly important role in health and wellbeing. This conference explored how novel research in industry and academia is advancing our understanding of human nutrition. The award is named after Michael Faraday FRS, the influential inventor and electrical pioneer who was prominent in the public communication of science and founded the Christmas lectures at the Royal Institution. The Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize and Lecture is awarded annually to the scientist or engineer whose expertise in communicating scientific ideas in lay terms is exemplary. His most recent book is Being You: A New Science of Consciousness. Professor Seth is Editor-in-Chief of Neuroscience of Consciousness (Oxford University Press). He is also Co-Director of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) Program on Brain, Mind, and Consciousness, and of the Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarship Programme: From Sensation and Perception to Awareness. The Michael Faraday Prize and Lecture 2023 is awarded to Professor Anil K Seth for his ability to inspire and communicate concepts and advances in cognitive neuroscience and consciousness, and therefore what it means to be human, to the public.Īnil K Seth is Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience at the University of Sussex, where he is also Director of the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science.
